After announcing my pregnancy at around 16 weeks, Anneke at Komu got in touch. She and Sarah had teamed up with Emiliana at The Mindful Birth Group, and together they had put together the Ultimate Birth and Parenthood course. Anneke is a midwife, and Sarah is a mum and business owner, and through Komu, they have created a postnatal support digital kit, full of hours of videos and audio files about all things postpartum. Emiliana is a hypnobirthing teacher, who has created an online 60 minute hypnobirthing essentials audio course, with relaxation audios, an infant feeding guide, and a trimester guide by The Modern Midwife included. Access to both courses can be purchased as a bundle for £40.

In a word- yes! TMBG hypnobirthing course is a sort of essential crash course. It's not as detailed or comprehensive as a 1:1 lesson of course, but it still covers a huge amount of information. I actually completed this course first, before my antenatal classes- and I felt very well prepared after just an hour. I felt like a had a real head start! The course is all downloaded into the Teachable app on my phone, and given that it is audio files instead of videos I was able to listen on the go, rather than having to park up at my desk. For mums who are busy right up until day dot, whether that be with work or older children, this course may be the best option, as it won't take up nearly as much of your precious time, while still giving you the skills.

The course notes for each section are actually a complete transcript of the course- so if you're *really* squeezed for time, you can read the information in its entirety instead. VERY handy.

The relaxation audio files I found to be great as well- while I didn’t use them during my birth, I found them to be very helpful when pregnancy insomnia kicked in. Specifically, the 'Summer Skies' audio- that shizz is relaxing as hell!

The support materials are all really beneficial as well, and again, they're all PDF printables, with lots of diagrams, a door sign, checklists, and more. A really excellent set of easy to understand resources!

The Komu postnatal pack is also absolutely wicked. There is SO much covered. Like literally everything you could ever think of is included, from a 21 minute baby massage video, to information about tongue tie- and that's just two of the seventeen files in the baby health and wellbeing bit- one of nine jam-packed sections. See? I told you. This course is FULL.

The video and audio files are categorised really well and range from as short as under a minute or two (there is an excellent 1.47 video on How to Cough Properly to Avoid Urine Leakage, by Elodie Poissenot, My French Physio) right up to a 35 minute file of the sounds of a crying baby, to play to your dog, and get them used to the sound before you bring home the real thing. There is a huge amount of experts delivering these mini-lessons as well, such as Anneke herself, Dr Jemma Hunter: The Mummy Dentist, bottle and breastfeeding expert Claire Byam-Cook, and loads more. Again, as I've said now a few times- this course is brilliant.

There are some PDFs included as well, but actually, the sheer volume of videos, and the fact that they've been categorised so brilliantly, means I haven't actually felt the need to note them all down. I've watched them all, but some of them aren't applicable to me (I don't have a dog, and I don’t drive) or certainly won't be for a few months- by which point, other sections will be fully learned and just a part of day to day life. So even though there is so much to take in, it does not need completing all in one go- in fact, that wouldn't be a very good idea. Save the lessons on teething and weaning for when that time actually comes!

Both courses were manageable, informative, and easy to consume without feeling overwhelmed! I’d highly recommend the package for the value for money- both parents can really benefit from it, especially terrified first timers!

Emiliana is mum to Mollie {4} and Theo {2}. She set up The Mindful Birth Group after hypnobirthing helped her to have 2 positive homebirth experiences- having been terrified of birth beforehand. She then went on to be a surrogate for her best friend, and gave birth abdominally via c section to baby Leo in March. Emiliana is now back in full swing as a hypnobirthing teacher and doula, and has been teaching/supporting parents remotely during lockdown. The Mindful Birth Group has a way to prep for birth for everyone- from a £10 60 minute course to Zoom call classes to a full 6 hour private course taught by Emiliana in the comfort of your own home. She is just about to launch her exciting ‘group courses with a difference’ at the brand new Birch Hotel in Hertfordshire. Emiliana loves what she does as she is able to help parents prep for birth, whilst making a living and doing it flexibly around her family.

We are good friends, Anneke and Sarah. Anneke is a Midwife with more than a decade of experience working in hospitals, as well as being a mum of two, and Sarah is a mum and runs her own business – which can be a juggle at times!

We started our company, Komu a few years ago as we wanted to create modern postnatal support that would help educate parents-to-be and new parents through the postnatal period but was also accessible and affordable to everyone.

Becoming a parent is such a momentous occasion and we know only too well how completely overwhelming those initial months can be; the unsureness, the constant questioning but not wanting to look neurotic, even the smallest thing can become overwhelming, especially at 3am in the morning when you are frazzled and at your wits end from sleep deprivation but are trying desperately not to resort to Doctor Google!  The lack of support out there for parents is real and something Anneke, as a Midwife, is acutely aware of. As soon as you take your bundle of joy home the support starts to drop off - at a time when you need it most.

We are very much aware how little time new parents have to even have a hot cup of tea, let alone find the time to research trusted experts to support you with your little one and then leave the house to go visit them. Which is why we created the Digital Kits, online resources that allows you to have access to professional support and practical advice from trusted Midwives and leading postnatal experts from the comfort of your home (or out an about on your phone!). We want to empower new mums and dads with knowledge, in the hope that their journey to becoming a parent won’t be a bumpy one and to let them know that they are not alone and there is support out there should they need it. It still amazes us that couples spend so much time and money preparing for the birth but give so little thought to what happens when their baby arrives and how unprepared they feel. It shouldn’t be this way. We want to see more of a full circle of support for mums from pregnancy to birth, right the way through to early motherhood, so we are on a mission to make postnatal care as wonderful as prenatal care, and ensure mum and dads are as prepared as they can be and that becoming a parent is as a positive and a happy of an experience as it can be.
